CUPS
Inspired by a true story, a lesbian couple looking for a sperm donor opt for a more personal approach.
Director’s Statement:
CUPS is a short film about the human need to procreate and the unique reality that lesbian couples face when it comes to securing a sperm donor. Inspired by real life events that took place during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lindsay and Natalie must resort to a more self-directed approach to getting pregnant, thrusting them into an unexpected relationship with their sperm donor, Paul. The ensuing adventure highlights some of the awkward intimacy and sanctity of child-making that can often be lost in, well, sex.
The film uses humour to celebrate the determination of queer people to make a family in spite of very real obstacles such as judgment, medical access and cost prohibitiveness.
CUPS aims to showcase how family planning can take various routes, several of which are not the traditional form of sexual coupling, nor are they necessarily clinical.
Confusion and hatred towards queer people and “non-traditional” families is still very much a reality, and our aim is to add more examples of their beauty and love to our cultural landscape in this awkward and heartfelt film.
